Phil Mickelson won his 3rd Green Jacket today. After his obligatory fist pump and caddy hug. He left the green and embraced his wife, Amy. Amy is battling cancer, as is Phil’s mother. Amy Mickelson had not been at a tournament since she was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months ago, and Phil has not looked the same ever since.
“I wasn’t sure if she was going to be there,” Mickelson said.
After sharing a long embrace with her, Phil walked to the scoring tent, a single tear wandering down his cheek to his lip.
“We’ve been through a lot this year. It means a lot to share some joy together,” Mickelson said, his voice cracking. “It’s been such an incredible week, an emotional week. And to cap it off with a victory is something I can’t put into words. It’s something we’ll share for the rest of our lives.”
As I watched this scene, the thought flashed through my mind, “What if this had been Tiger? Who would he embrace after his caddy?”
How hollow a life built by sin. Even when it is successful, it consumes you.
