I have been deeply impressed this Christmas season at the number of carols that can’t leave Jesus’ birth well enough alone. Now, some Christmas carols are pretty inane (Away in a Manger), but most of the traditional carols are chockful of the gospel.
I particularly love the last two verses to Joy to the World. The message of triumph over sin and death and all the curse is the message that I want to ponder anew this year.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
