After reading Let Boys Be Boys, I went scrounging the net looking for some audio to listen to while working. Here is a two part interview she did on a podcast. (The interviewer is pretty lame, but he eventually quits talking long enough to let Dr. Meeker make some insightful comments.)

Here are her interviews about raising daughters and raising sons. Here is a youtube video (which I have yet to watch, but will soon).

tough foundations

…instilling toughness in boys is extraordinarily important. A masculine toughness is the only foundation upon which a masculine tenderness may be safely placed. Without a concrete foundation, thoughtfulness, consideration, and sensitivity in men is just simply gross.

One of the few rhetorical geniuses of our generation died just about one year ago. Those of us who met him as the long-time host of Firing Line fell in love with words, logic, rhetoric, and a really dry wit. (Emulating the master does not always translate well to JH and HS Bible classes, but it sure is fun for the few who catch it.)

Yes, he was the intellectual daddy of modern conservatism. Yes, he was the delighted “scourge of liberalism” (thank you Art Schlesinger). And yes, he was an accomplished author, writing more than 50 books spanning numerous genre. But his legacy must include his “polysyllabic exuberance” (NYT), and that was sheer music.

And so, here’s to you, Mr. Buckley. We miss you…and your words.

  • “I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said.”
  • “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.”
  • “It is not a sign of arrogance for the king to rule. That is what he is there for.” (Rom 11.36)
  • “You cultivate the essential virtues: high purpose, intelligence, decency, humility, fear of the Lord, and the passion for freedom.”
  • “There is an inverse relationship between reliance on the state and self-reliance.”
  • “The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry.”
  • “I mean to live my life an obedient man, but obedient to God, subservient to the wisdom of my ancestors; never to the authority of political truths arrived at yesterday at the voting booth.”
  • “The academic community has in it the biggest concentration of alarmists, cranks and extremists this side of the giggle house.”
  • “Truth is a demure lady, much too ladylike to knock you on your head and drag you to her cave. She is there, but people must want her, and seek her out.” (not quite Proverbs 1.20-33, but close)
  • “I would like to take you seriously, but to do so would affront your intelligence.”
  • “Does baloney fear the grinder?”
  • “He invented the news magazine. He invested [it] with an interpretation Tell what happened, tell it well, tell it concisely, but with attention to the belletristic imperative.” (belletristic imperative???? someone knows what this is, and uses it in conversation? He drove us to dictionaries. And it sounded cool, even when you had no clue what he just said.)
  • “Relate it to what should happen; fuse it into the long morality play that began, really, in the Garden of Eden.”
  • “Some of my instincts are reprehensible.”
  • “To buy very good wine nowadays requires only money. To serve it to your guests is a sign of fatigue.” (once again, I am not sure what he means, but the eyebrows, the eyebrows…)
  • “Norman Mailer decocts matters of the first philosophical magnitude from an examination of his own ordure, and I am not talking about his books.” (decocts?? ordure?????!)
  • “Conservatives should be adamant about the need for the reappearance of Judeo-Christianity in the public square.”

And my two personal favorites:

  • “The Beatles are not merely awful. They are so unbelievably horrible, so appallingly unmusical, so dogmatically insensitive to the magic of the art, that they qualify as crowned heads of antimusic.”
  • “A Conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling “Stop!””
